December has different birthstones. Confusing. Turquoise has been the birthstone for a long time. American Indians love to use this beautiful shade of blue in their jewelry. It is a very affordable stone. Tanzanite is a newcomer. The stone was not discovered until 1967 in the area of Mt. Kilimanjaro and that area of Tanzania remains the only location where this gem has been discovered. Due to its rareness it is expensive. In 2002 Tiffany changed their December birthstone to Tanzanite. I guess if I were Tiffany I’d want to sell a birthstone that had the cost of Tanzanite vs. the cost of Turquoise.
